Home-made Advent or Yule Log Decoration

Merry Christmas everybody!

I have been busy this Christmas Eve making an advent log to place on the Christmas dinner table.

As children growing up in Germany my sister and I often used to make similar logs with my Mother with items collected from forest walks.
I used what I had to hand in my house and garden.

Supplies:
Log - my neighbour had part of her apple tree cut down last year so I neatened up one of the off cuts by sawing off the ends.
Candles - I bought these years ago and they have been sat in the cupboard under the stairs, some of them have been chewed by mice.
Fir branches - these were bits I had to cut off my Christmas tree in order to get it into its stand.
Ribbon - from a reel given to me by a friend who was originally given the ribbon by Zandra Rhodes
Berries - left over from decorating my fir bunting.

How I made it:
First of all I trimmed each end of the log with a saw (using a portable work bench).
Then I placed the log on my kitchen table in various different positions to find which was most stable.
I marked where the candles should go (four equally spaced positions) by drilling a small hole with a drill.
Then I used a special drill bit to make the candle holes.
I used arch shaped pins (jewellery pins) and a tack hammer to fix the fir branches to each side of the candle holes.
Next I tied the berries onto the pins to conceal them.
I made a little rosette/flower out of the ribbon by simply making loops and fixing each loop in the middle with a stitch and then concealing the stitches by sewing on a fold of ribbon. I attache the ribbon by pinning it with a jewellery pin under the ribbon fold.
I secured the candles by dripping a generous quantity of melted candle wax (from another, unwanted candle) into the holes and then holding the candle firm while the wax hardened.

I am feeling pretty pleased with myself as I didn't spend a penny on making this and it's going to make a very festive and pretty centre piece to my Christmas dinner table :-)
