Beyond the Square Crochet Motif #32

I haven't really had the chance to keep up properly with the "Beyond the Square" CAL (crochet along) on Ravelry. I seem to join in and do the odd motif here and there but easily get pulled off on a tangent. This is a classic example.
I made motif #32 and I really like the effect achieved with the bpdc (back post double crochet) stitch. I have used this before in a couple of projects to create a kind of rib effect. When you use it for every stitch the rows overlap, creating a dense fabric. Ideal for pot holders, I thought, because you could get away with just one layer instead of having to make them double thickness.
Barbara has also made this motif in her challenge. Looks like great minds think alike because she also mentions that this would be a good motif for a pot-holder.
Before I knew it I was experimenting with some scrap DK cotton and 3.5mm crochet hook. I reversed some of the rows, turning the work from the right side to the wrong side and vice versa when changing colours. Now I don't know which is the back and which is the front, nor can I decide which I prefer!
This motif is from this book:
