Beyond the Square Crochet Motif #118

I've got an idea in my head about making a shopping bag using the left over cotton yarn from the blanket I made last year.
At the moment it's just a rough plan... motifs sewn together, a sold crocheted base and handles... about the same size as the hessian bags you get from Tesco.
The recipient : my mother in law as a thank you for babysitting.
I'm just going to be flying by the seat of my pants, starting with a few test squares to see what size hook works best.
The first four squares (on the right) were made using a 4mm hook. I felt the resulting "fabric" was too floppy and the gaps between the motifs are quite large so I'd be worried about things falling out.
I went down to a 3.5mm hook and much prefer the result.
There's quite a difference between the test squares from 3.5mm to 4mm, isn't there? A difference of almost 2.5mm across the 4 squares sewn together.
Don't forget Barbara from made in K-town has a very inspiring blog dedicated to the book this motif comes from.
