I'm still messing around with the idea of making a shopping bag using Motif #118 from the book "Beyond The Square Crochet Motifs".
I have two concerns:
1. I won't have enough of the left over cotton DK blanket yarn
2. The joined motifs are quite "holey", i.e. there are some quite large gaps out of which small items of shopping could fall out.
This is an experiment of kinds so I'm going to continue going with the flow.
To address my first issue I am going to use another colour to crochet the borders of the motif panels. It's a discontinued cotton yarn by Wendy called Pearl. I really love this yarn and wish it was still available.
I have made a half double crochet (hdc in US crochet terms) at each "anchor point" of the motif and then chained eight between the hdc. Onto this I will do one or maybe even two rows of double crochet.
This should in part address worry no. 2 as I think this should add some stability.
As a back up I could line the bag with some calico...but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it :-)
This is Motif #118 from Edie Eckman's book "Beyond The Square Crochet".
Hi,
ReplyDeleteYou could combine your crochet squares in a dress, use them for as crochet yoke for a summer dress, or sew the famous Marilyn Monroe subway dress and make your crochet squares into the waist section of the garment....
Hi Vanina, Yes that could look cute. Thank you :-)
DeleteI have almost finished this bag but I have often wondered whether I should try and combine my sewing skills with crochet and make a dress. Perhaps I'll start off by making something for my daughter.

I had that same "holey" problem when I tried making a bag out of a motif - the only solution I could come up was to add lining to it, but I didn't like the idea of lining, and my project is still sitting there, unfinished :(
ReplyDeleteYou could use it for carrying large items only :)
