I don't really agree in keeping animals in cages but I have been told there is something to learn from keeping and looking after pets - apparently it could be good for my daughter.
So, I decided at least the rabbits must come from a rescue centre. I would feel better for some reason if I felt we was giving these creatures a better life than they might otherwise have.
We went to Animal Life-Line, a rabbit rescue centre about half an hours drive away and we picked brother and sister baby rabbits - only 9 weeks old! Apparently the previous owner had allowed her rabbits to breed and the resulting babies, or kittens as my daughter keeps correcting me, were left to roam freely in the garden. But as anybody living in suburbia (or likely most places in the UK) there are always foxes and a fox was coming every night and helping himself to a tasty snack of baby rabbits. There were originally more than 30 rabbit kittens; by the time they were taken into a rescue centre there were only 12.
So we have the lucky ones...I hope. I really hope we can give them a good life.
Right now they are still settling in. Today will be their second night with us. It's very cold and I do worry that they will be warm enough outside all night. There is plenty of hay and I have put a lined curtain over the hutch for the night to help keep out the cold and wind. I will get a tarpaulin this week.
They are still quite shy but the lady at the rescue centre said they will take a few days, maybe even a week or so to settle in but we should handle them everyday to build a connection.
My daughter named the girl Lulu and the boy Smokey. Afterwards she wanted to change the names to Athena and Menelaus... my son wanted to call the boy rabbit Ash (like the Pokemon trainer), then Mercury. But I told them you can't keep changing their names! So they still remain Lulu and Smokey.
Here they are....I have to admit, they are seriously cute!
