I bought these seeds on a whim from the Chiltern Seeds vegetable catalogue whilst buying my tomato seeds.
This is the catalogue description of Celtuce:
As the name suggests, this useful vegetable combines the uses of Celery and Lettuce - the young leaves, which contain four times as much Vitamin C as Lettuce, can be used in salads or boiled as Greens, but its main value is the central stem or stalk which is eaten raw or cooked like Celery. Grow it in the same way as Lettuce.

I am not a very attentive gardener but found these to be an  easy to grow salad green, they just need to be protected from slugs and snails. The Celtuce didn't even seem to mind relative drought.
So what does Celtuce look like? It looks a bit like fat dandelion leaves, without as many serrated edges.

I have not tried the stalks yet but I have been picking off the young leaves as salad to put in sandwiches. The leaves don't taste too much like celery but they are definitely tastier than your standard lettuce leaves and I'm sure it's not the case that they have been self grown and picked fresh from the garden which makes them seem tastier.
I'm not sure what they are referring to when they talk about the "stalks"...perhaps they mean the ridge down the middle of the mature leaf? I am looking forward to trying the stalks once they get bigger.
very interesting, I love growing different kinds of lettuces, and I'll keep an eye out for this variety next year!
