Knitted Squares

I have recently knitted some squares using  "scrap" sock yarn and 4ply yarn. The squares are my contribution to a "comfort" blanket that is being put together by a group on the knitting forum.
The squares are knitted diagonally which is a really good way of getting just the right dimensions because you don't need to work out how many stitches to cast on to get the right size, you just keep knitting and increasing one stitch every row until you get to the desired size and then you simply decrease one stitch each row until you run out of stitches!
Here is a basic tutorial.

1. Cast on 3 stitches.
2. Knit the 3 stitches.
3. K1, M1, K to the end of the row
4. Continue to increase one stitch at the beginning of each row...
5. ...until you reach the desired size, in this case 4". Half the square is knitted!
6. Now you will start to decrease. K1, SSK, K to the end of the row.
7. Continue to decrease one stitch at the beginning of each row, until....
8. ...you are left with 3 stitches
9. Use a tapestry needle to thread the yarn through the last 3 stitches and secure with a knot.

10. Ta da!
