Finished! - A Blanket in a Year

If you have been following my blog or know me from Ravelry, then you may be aware that at the beginning of 2011 I set myself the task of crocheting a blanket for my king size bed.
The pattern I chose was "Grandmother's Lace" by Anne Halliday from the book A Crocheter's Garden of Afghans

Although I made the motif exactly as directed in the book, I used a thinner yarn than suggested  (DK cotton) with a 3.5mm crochet hook because I wanted a finer look. And because the finished blanket needed to fit my bed I also had to make it a lot bigger; I needed to make 625 motifs. Each motif took 6-8 minutes to make. I tried to make at least 2 or 3 motifs every day. Once completed, the motifs had to be whip stitched together. All the ends needed weaving in and finally a border crocheting on.

I chose a machine washable yarn but I'm not sure I feel confident about putting it through the wash!
This weekend, 10 months after starting, I finished the monster blanket, just in time for the winter!
It is very beautiful, even if I do say so myself and it has already kept me warm the last two nights.
I have spent quite a bit of time just admiring it and experiencing the satisfaction and sense of achievement from having crafted this object with my own hands.

I am now wondering if I should make another one of the blankets from the book...I do love vintage style crochet!
