Making Ice-Cream in an Ice-Cream Maker

A few years back I asked my daughter what she wanted for her 8th birthday. "An ice-cream maker!" came the reply. She wanted the toy version she had seen on TV adverts. I had a hunch that these would be pretty useless and after reading many negative reviews on Amazon, I soon discovered I was right. So I decided to get her the cheapest and simplest "adult" version of an ice-cream make that I could find. I opted for the Philips HR2304.

The Philips HR2304 is basically an insulated jug into the bottom of which you place a pre-frozen "cooling disc". You then clip on the "whisk" and the motorised arm. When the liquid hits the cooling disc it freezes and the slowly rotating whisk  simulataneously scrapes the frozen liquid off the disc and mixes it into the rest of the liquid. After about  45-50 minutes the mix is frozen to a soft scoop consistency. This type of icecream maker doesn't make hard ice-cream and on a hot summers day, the best you can hope for is an  ice cream with a Mr. Whippy type consistency.
The unit is easy to clean and once I've washed the cooling disc I put it straight back in the bottom of the freezer ready for next time. The freezer disc has a kind of non-stick coating so in order to protect this, I put the disc in a plastic bag.
So, we have used the machine about half a dozen times since we bought it....and then only to make the basic vanilla icecream recipe that came with the product.... that was over two years ago.

I feel it's time to dust it off and start getting a bit adventurous with the recipes. I have never even made anything with the recipe book I bought her to go with it!

The Philips HR2304 is sadly no longer in stock, but I had a quick look on Amazon and there are currently two comparable products available:
