Dido Deux - The Virtuous Stole

A few days ago I finished the Dido shawl by  Åsa Tricosa that was commissioned by a friend for his wife. This was a secret project and she doesn't know anything about it yet!
I did  make a few modifications to the pattern. It was designed for fingering weight yarn but my friend wanted it as a lace shawl so I used a lace-weight yarn and smaller needles (3.75mm). Because of the finer yarn and smaller needles I needed to add extra pattern repeats to the width to make sure it would be stole sized and not narrow and scarf like.
I love the lace motif in the main body of the pattern, it was a pleasure to knit and because I worked on it a little bit everyday whilst listening to the radio, I never got bored of it. It took me nearly three months.

So why is this shawl so virtuous? Well, it has contributed to three good causes... and of course (I hope) will delight a certain lady on Christmas day!

  • Pattern - Dido was purchased from p/hop with a donation to MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders)
  • Yarn - Manos del Uruguay Lace which is a fair trade yarn from a non-profit organisation that helps women in rural Uruguay to make a living.
  • Payment - I didn't want to take any payment for my work but my friend insisted...in the end I asked him to make a donation to my favourite cause, the Amur Leopards.
