Crochet Cotton Pot Holder

I love the look of handmade crocheted pot holders. Not only can you use them as an oven glove, they can also be used as an attractive trivet on the table. I have made quite a few as gifts for people.  It's handy if you know the person and have been to their house...you can colour co-ordinate the yarn to match their kitchen decor.
This is one I made yesterday.
I used DK cotton and a 3mm crochet hook. I prefer using cotton as opposed to acrylic as acrylic melts when exposed to high temperatures whereas cotton will just singe. It's also good to have quite a tight gauge to minimise big holes...you don't want fingers poking through and getting burnt on hot pots!

The hexagon  is made using "leaning tower stitch" and is motif # 54, taken from the book Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs
I made the two motifs slightly larger (by two rounds), alternating the colours for each row.
On one of the motifs I added a 30 stitch chain at the end of the last round and fastened it off in the same stitch to make a  hanging loop.
I wove in the ends, and with the wrong sides together, I joined the motifs with a round of single crochet. In the same round I encased the chain stitch loop with single crochet stitches.
These are great little projects for using left over scraps of yarn. The cream colour is left over from the crochet blanket I made last year.
The blue yarn is Twilleys Freedom Sincere Organic Cotton.... very soft but also very splitty...not the best yarn for crochet.
I am happy with the result...I hope the recipient likes it....the colours remind me of vanilla ice-ream and blue skies...one way to defy winter?

  1. I love crocheted potholders - my favourite go-to hostess gift. Your colour combo is so yummy.

My other favourite are felted ones - you can grab the hottest stuff from the oven and no burns.
