When I saw the new Spring Harvest 2105 magazine at the checkout the other week, I picked it up with great anticipation. Marco Baby also thought it looked pretty appetising as he chewed a big chunk out of the cover.
Here are the 27 recipes. I didn't immediately warm to them as there seem to be leaning more towards sweet things and I'm usually looking for healthy family meals. However, there are definitely quite a few I will be trying out - I'll make a summary at the end of what I'll be cooking in case you are interested in seeing how they turn out. I'd also love to hear from you if you have the magazine and are planning to make anything from it.
1. Quail's Eggs & Pickled Cucumber on Rye
This looks nice - I like all the ingredients. Well, I think I will like quail's eggs but I have never cooked them or eaten them.
2. Rhubarb, Goat's Cheese & Rye Thins
Rhubarb and goats cheese is a great combo and I've always loved rye bread, probably going back to my childhood in Germany. I used to ride my bike to the nearest town to get half a large roggenbrot for my mother.
3. Crispy Potato & Beetroot Cake With Sweet Mustard Sauce
Well, you're probably well aware of my love of beetroot!
4. Herb Salad With Mustard Seed & Lemon Dressing
This looks quite refreshing although I am dubious about finding juniper berries in my local Waitrose. We'll see.
I love radish (even if they do cause quite a bit of flatulence!) ...not a massive fan of blue cheese but if I'm in the right mood...
6. Cardamom Cloud Ice Cream With Warm Berry Sauce
This looks interesting. It has broken meringue pieces in it... I haven't made any ice cream for a long time so I should really get the ice-cream maker out of the cupboard and dust it off now that the warmer weather is here.
7. Spicy Asian Salad
Not 100% sure about this. I like the concept but after reading through the recipe I'm not convinced.
8. Sweet Potato Wedges With Pineapple Ketchup
Not going to try this because I have roasted sweet potatoes before and they are not to my liking - too soft usually. Ok if you're going to put them in with something else but roasted on their own and to be eaten like potatoe wedges I prefer something crispy. And pineapple ketchup sounds like instant heart burn!
Key Lime Pie is a family favourite dessert but I usually buy it ready made. I'd like to make it myself.
I love sorbet and the kids love kiwi so this could be a winner.
I'm in two minds about this one.
This is the kind of thing I love to eat for dinner but usually results in the kids and the OH complaining that they are still hungry. Also, the recipe is for some of the items in the photo only, the rest you buy ready made from Waitrose unless you have time to make everything yourself!
13. Vegatable Thali
I like the look of this but might not be ideal for the gannets in my house. And same as above in regards to the fact that some of the items are bought ready made.
14. Sushi With Tempura Vegetables
No - Too much faffing around involved.
I like the look of this but my daughter hates aubergines and spicy food so perhaps one to make when she's not around. (made 11/04/2015, blog post here...)
This looks nice but I don't think it would satisfy my lot as a meal in itself.
This just looks like a whole ton of cabbage on a pile of rice.
18. Cheese & Tomato Pizzas
A bit boring and I've made this kind of thing a million times before. Kids would like it though.
19. Potato & Onion Bake With Gorgonzola Sauce
This could be tasty served with sausages as a mid week family meal.
Not keen on this after my previous encounter with chicory.
21. Spring Vegetable & Noodle Stir Fry
There are so few ingredients in this...I think it would be ok as a side but I wouldn't class it as a "simple supper".
This looks interesting and certainly something I'd try out.
23. Lemon & Pistachio Easter Cake
A lovely cake but far too much fannying around for me - I wouldn't have time to prepare this and it would probably go wrong and anyway, unless I make it today I've missed the Easter time slot!
24. Rhubarb & Custard Tray-bake
Oh yes! Right up my street!
This doesn't appeal to me.
I quite like these fun scones but not sure if my older kids are too old and Marco Baby is definitely too young to appreciate these.
No way! Just looking at these and reading the recipe set my teeth on edge! Sugar overload!
